 Guest Post:

When it comes to 13, I am beyond excited.  What started out as one book grew into a seven-book series; a ‘realm’ that I seriously had no clue would appear from this one idea. But I have to say, having Leah Tallent and Gareth Lowery as part of my daily life now is extremely cool.

Being the daughter of a career librarian, I have always been fascinated with history. Whether it was the story of a real-life haunted house or the inner-workings of the Library of Alexandria or the mysteries of Athena – everything made my mind literally explode. I love being able to link mysteries together in order to form puzzles that will give readers thrills and chills, but still have them running to Google to look up the locales and see for themselves what extraordinary things are out there.

The actual idea for 13 happened when I stumbled across a notation in an old reference book that stated there were 13 astrological signs written about in a science text that was given to the actual Pope in order to be ‘accepted’ by the Church. Apparently, the 13th sign was actually thrown out because of the fact that the figure/icon was a man with a snake around his neck, which as far as that time period was concerned, stood for the Devil.

From this one thought, a wealth of information cropped up and I began exploring how this one idea could be turned into a mystery that would include the New York Public Library (my favorite place), the haunted Winchester Mansion, Jack the Ripper’s final ‘sighting,’ and would then lead all the way to Glastonbury Tor which would hold a secret that tied every one of these places and events together in some exciting way. But as I continued, even more surfaced that allowed me to add locations such as Loch Ness and the home of the ‘self-proclaimed’ Devil, Aleister Crowley.

The mystery was so thrilling for me that I poured over piles of research about these fantastic locations and the ancient past so that I could put as much ‘fact’ amongst the fiction as possible. For the readers out there, I hope they truly love the experience they have when history, suspense and adventure all come together in 13. And I also hope that they will continue on the journey with Leah and Gareth into “The Sapphire Storm,” which is the next book in the series that will arrive from Suspense Publishing later this year, and will offer up a new puzzle that will link the ‘real’ Shakespeare to Petra, Cairo, Athena, and a location that is very well known but houses something no one has ever seen before.

Let’s just say that 13 is the beginning of an unforgettable adventure – and even I can’t wait to find out how it’s all going to end. (Not to mention, with all this information in my head, if I ever get on Jeopardy, I just might win LOL.)

In 1902, in a dark room on the fifth floor of Carnegie Hall, thirteen people came together to continue a tradition that had been set in stone thousands of years before.

In 2012, Leah Tallent is Head of Research at the New York Public Library. Stoic and stable, brilliant and cynical, she has forever enjoyed her existence among the book stacks. Gareth Lowery has spent his life searching for the ultimate artifact that he is certain exists. His life's pursuit has been to retrieve twelve keys hidden by men whose job it was to protect the single biggest secret ever kept.
