 Guest Post:

In 1968, after being discharged from the US Marines as a Vietnam veteran, I went to college in Southern California and wrote my first novel. For the next 39 years, I collected rejection slips and was fired by several agents.

Although I was represented by more than one reputable agent over the decades and came close several times to landing a contract with traditional publishers, a contract never materialized. One publisher went so far as to write in the rejection that their editorial staff loved the book but no one was buying that type of story—better luck elsewhere.

By the time I finished college, I had earned a BA in journalism and an MFA in writing.  In fact, in the 1980s, I attended writing workshops for several years out of the UCLA Extension Writers' Program driving more than 140 miles round trip each week.

Then in 2007, I decided to self-publish My Splendid Concubine, which I had been working on for seven years. Our Hart, Elegy for a Concubine, the sequel, followed in 2010.  The Concubine Saga combines both the prequel and sequel in one volume.

The Concubine Saga is about Sir Robert Hart's (1835 - 1911) passionate bitter-sweet romance with his concubine Ayaou.  Saga is historical fiction based on the real life of Hart, who arrived in China in 1854 to work as an interpreter for the British consulate. A few years later, he was offered a job to work for the emperor of China.

When Hart left China in 1908, he was the most powerful foreigner to have ever lived and worked in China and the only Westerner the emperor of China trusted.

Shortly before his death, Hart attempted to erase his decade long romance with Ayaou from his journals and letters but failed.  The Concubine Saga is the lusty love story that Sir Robert Hart did not want the world to discover.

The setting of the novel takes place during the Opium Wars and the Taiping Rebellion, the bloodiest rebellion in human history—Hart played a crucial role to end this rebellion after more than a decade of war and at least 20 million killed.

After having written a dozen manuscripts over the decades and collecting hundreds of rejection slips, it was great to see My Splendid Concubine selected for iUniverse's Editor's Choice; then Publisher's Choice and Reader's Choice in 2008 in addition to earning an honorable mention in general fiction from the 2008 London Book Festival.

After launching my own imprint, Three Clover Press, and leaving iUniverse in 2009, Concubine went on to earn honorable mentions in general fiction from the San Francisco Book Festival and the Hollywood Book Festival.

The sequel, Our Hart, Elegy for a Concubine did even better.  In 2009, the sequel earned honorable mentions in general fiction from the Los Angeles Book Festival, Nashville Book Festival, London Book Festival and DIY Book Festival. Then in 2010, it was a finalist of the National Best Books 2010 Awards.

The Midwest Book Review said, "My Splendid Concubine is packed cover to cover with intriguing characters and plot, a must read for historical fiction fans and a find addition to any collection on the genre."

Cheryl Koch, one of Amazon's top Vine Reviewers with over 1,000 reviews wrote, "Lofthouse did an amazing job with My Splendid Concubine."

The Historical Novel Society said, "Those who are interested in unconventional romances with an out-of-the-ordinary setting will find plenty to enjoy."

A Writer's Digest Judge said, "A powerful novel whose beauty exceeds that of the book's cover."
For Our Hart, the Midwest Book Review said "a unique and entertaining read, recommended."

If I had given up during the 39 years I was collecting rejection slips from traditional publishers and being fired by agents, none of this would have happened.

No Westerner has ever achieved Robert Hart’s status and level of power in China. Driven by a passion for his adopted country, Hart became the “godfather of China’s modernism”, inspector general of China’s Customs Service, and the builder of China’s railroads, postal and telegraph systems and schools.

However, his first real love is Ayaou, a young concubine. Sterling Seagrave, in Dragon Lady, calls her Hart’s sleep-in dictionary and says she was wise beyond her years.

Soon after arriving in China in 1854, Hart falls in love with Ayaou, but his feelings for her sister go against the teachings of his Christian upbringing and almost break him emotionally. To survive he must learn how to live and think like the Chinese. He also finds himself thrust into the Opium Wars and the Taiping Rebellion, the bloodiest rebellion in human history, where he makes enemies of men such as the American soldier of fortune known as the Devil Soldier.

During his early years in China, Robert experiences a range of emotion from bliss to despair. Like Damascus steel, he learns to be both hard and flexible, which forges his character into the great man he becomes.

In time, an ancient empire will rely on him to survive, and he will become the only foreigner the Emperor of China trusts.

Full of humanity, passion, and moral honesty, The Concubine Saga is the deeply intimate story of Hart’s loyalty and love for his adopted land and the woman who captured his heart.

“My Splendid Concubine” was the love story Sir Robert Hart did not want the world to discover.

In the sequel, “Our Hart, Elegy for a Concubine”, he was the only foreigner the Emperor of China trusted.

Both novels have come together as one in “The Concubine Saga”.

Author Guest Post With Joanne Levy

Joanne Levy has kindly agreed to share a character guest post here, starring Lilah Bloom, in honor of her debut release, Small Medium At Large.

 About The Author:
Joanne Levy’s love of books began at a very early age.  Being the youngest and the only female among four children, she was often left to her own devices and could frequently be found sitting in a quiet corner with her nose in a book. After much teenage misadventure, Joanne eventually graduated from university and now spends her weekdays as an executive assistant at one of Canada's big banks planning meetings and thwarting coffee emergencies.  When Joanne isn’t working, she can usually be found at her computer, channeling her younger self into books.  Joanne still lives in Ontario with her husband and kids of the furred and feathered variety.  You can follow Joanne on Twitter or find her on Facebook.

 Guest Post:

Hi. I’m Lilah Bloom and I guess I’m here to answer some questions about SMALL MEDIUM AT LARGE, the book about ME and how I became a medium (that’s a person who can hear ghosts) and found my dad a girlfriend AND helped save the eighth grade fashion show, AND ended up going to the dance with Andy, my super-cute crush. *Whew!* Pretty cool, right? I know! AND I did all this with Alex, who is my best friend and band-mate. Well, she’ll be my band-mate when we get our band together, that is. We’re still learning how to play and don’t even have our own instruments yet, but someday we’re going to ROCK IT! *slammin’ guitar move*

You want to know about the inspiration for this story (did I mention it’s about me?;-))? Okay, so Joanne woke up with the title in her head one morning. She says she has her subconscious to thank—I’m not even sure what a subconscious is—but I’m pretty sure it was actually a ghost who gave her the idea. I mean, that’s what they do sometimes—whisper in people’s ears. That’s how my grandmother, Bubby Dora, got that lady to call my dad out of the blue and ask him out on a date. They think it’s all coincidence, but I know better. Anyway, she thought about the title for a while and then came up with me, a vertically-challenged (calling me short is so un-pc) girl who gets hit by lightning and can then hear ghosts (don’t worry, other than the ghost-hearing thing, I’m okay after being hit by lightning. But in case you were wondering, yes, it was VERY scary!).

And as for Joanne’s inspiration to be a writer? Well, just like my Bubby, she’s always liked to tell stories, especially if they make people smile and laugh. She’s always written stuff down—it’s what she calls her *air quotes* ‘creative outlet’—so she’s always working away at her computer and eventually decided she’d like to share her stories with the world. Nine short years later, here I am! She says that nine short years thing is a joke, but I don’t get it—nine years seems like a long time to me.

Anyway, thanks for having me here! I almost never get to come out. You know, other than in that book she wrote, the one that’s all about me. ;-)

xoxo Lilah

After she’s hit by lightning at a wedding, twelve-year-old Lilah Bloom develops a new talent: she can hear dead people. Among them, there’s her overopinionated Bubby Dora; a prissy fashion designer; and an approval-seeking clown who livens up a séance. With Bubby Dora leading the way, these and other sweetly imperfect ghosts haunt Lilah through seventh grade, and help her face her one big fear: talking to—and possibly going to the seventh-grade dance with—her crush, Andrew Finkel.

Author Guest Post With Tigris Eden

Tigris Eden has kindly agreed to guest post here about her work, and share her inspiration for becoming a writer in honor of her debut release, Enslaved In Shadows.

 About The Author:

Source: http://www.tigriseden.com/

I love to write, read, and listen to music. My attempt at a music career sadly ended at the Apollo one warm night in May! LOL (Side note: I was not booed just outdone by two munchkins rapping to Biggy Smalls but they were good!)

Military brat extraordinaire; have traveled to a lot of interesting places.

The very first time I put pen to paper in story fashion, was in 6th grade. It was called The Case of the Missing Pepperoni.

It was a cute mystery where all the ingredients and shop appliances came to life when the store owner closed up for the evening.

 Guest Post:

Head Conversations:

I think most people would agree that hearing voices in your head is strange. Stranger still, is when the voices talk back when you purposely try to ignore them. I learned at a very early age it was just better to write about them than to forget about them. I by no means have a dog in my head telling me to kill people. I don’t think I am some divine prophet sent by the one true being, and telling you the mother ship is hours away from touchdown.

No, my brain works a little bit differently. The head conversation doesn’t just appear out of nowhere it derived from something as simple as, why do we call bread, bread. And then the conversation begins. It sounds crazy but I promise it’s not.  I was always that kid that thought outside of the box. Literally.

I remember my science teacher saying choose a partner and think of something brilliant. BRILLIANT! I remember my fifth grade partner. Her name was Christine. I won’t give out her last name, because that would just be rude… Anyway we choose, “Are there particles in the air you breathe” It was a simple experiment. We got some cans, opened them up and set up some different test variables. All had a constant. Vaseline. Then we covered some left some partially exposed to the elements and then left some completely open.

Now, I’d been having conversations in my head long before this experiment. Truly, I was a very inventive child. :)

I started thinking, what if we are trapping particles that are “alive” and their particle “mom” and “dad” would miss them if we caught them? What if the Vaseline is really an evil slimy goo that sucks the life right out of the particle? The particle needs to live to right? For my efforts I received a major headache, because the thoughts and conversations wouldn’t stop. I’d invented this entire grand plot to kill particles and that we were destroying worlds. Christine didn’t think so by the way. And we won first place that year too. Because there are particles in the air you breathe. DUH!

I swear this is going somewhere.

Any who, that’s how these conversations in my head come about, like with Enslaved. I’m sitting in the car Maroon 5’s Secret comes on and then I start thinking. What if I had characters who have a one night stand, then meet up five years later? What if the male character was a werewolf, and there were certain standards that he had to adhere to? Ooh and what if I threw in the fact he already had a girl? A stupid girl but a girl none the less.

I literally start asking these questions and then I get answers. I’m about to drop a secret. The person who answered those questions was none other than Royce.

Actual Head Conversation:

Me: What if they are in the jungle.

Royce: {at the time was an unknown character to me} Jungle sex has been overdone, try again.

Me: Jungle sex with glow bugs?

Royce: You mean the lightening bugs right? The one you caught as a kid? It could work but what else would you stick in there? I mean sex in the jungle with bugs who’s ass light up? Not getting a good picture here kiddo.

Me: What if it’s up against a cliff wall with a sheer drop covered in Moss with night orchids.

Royce: Ehh. It could work.

That is sort of how the conversation went, I’m leaving out some key words, but that’s pretty much how it goes for me. Every single time. I like Royce, he’s funny and sarcastic and says outlandish things. But, he was a constant when writing Enslaved and you’ll see a lot of him in the book, egging the characters on, pushing and pulling them this way and that with his offhand remarks. He’s classic!

Thanks for taking the time to read the post! If you haven’t picked up a copy of Enslaved In Shadows, today would totally be a good day to buy it! I wouldn’t be a bad idea. Swear!

Ciao! Tigris

Supernaturally by Kiersten White

Title: Supernaturally
Author: Kiersten White
Publisher: HarperTeen
Format: Hardcover
Publication Date: July 26, 2011
Overall: 4/5
Source: Borrowed
Evie finally has the normal life she’s always longed for. But she’s shocked to discover that being ordinary can be . . . kind of boring. Just when Evie starts to long for her days at the International Paranormal Containment Agency, she’s given a chance to work for them again. Desperate for a break from all the normalcy, she agrees.

But as one disastrous mission leads to another, Evie starts to wonder if she made the right choice. And when Evie’s faerie ex-boyfriend Reth appears with devastating revelations about her past, she discovers that there’s a battle brewing between the faerie courts that could throw the whole supernatural world into chaos. The prize in question? Evie herself.

So much for normal.

 Review:

Just when Evie finally gets to have a somewhat normal life like she always dreamed of, she discovers being normal is not all it's cracked up to be. Then she gets to a chance to work for IPCA again, somewhere she thinks she can find a place to fit in. But when Evie keeps finding herself in the middle of jobs gone wrong, she begins to think that's trouble going on in the paranormal world, and she might just be in the center of it.
First off, do I think SUPERNATURALLY was as good as PARANORMALCY? No, I don’t. I don’t know if my few problems with this book had more to do with the fact that second books in series are rarely as good as the first or third ones, but whatever it is, don’t get me wrong. I still really, really enjoyed SUPERNATURALLY. I’ve been waiting for forever to get to read this book and I was instantly sucked right back into the world. And mostly that’s because of Evie.

Oh goodness, how I love and appreciate Evie. I remember being so happy when I read PARANORMALCY because it renewed my faith that it is still possible to find gems in over-saturated genres like the paranormal genre. The PARANORMALCY trilogy is not your average paranormal story. Yes, largely this is due to the PARANORMALCY series’ unique twist on an old genre. But it’s also because of our dear narrator Evie. Evie! Hold on, just let me take a moment to build a shrine to this girl.

Okay, shrine built. It consists mainly (okay, only) of my copy of PARANORMALCY, but it’s the thought that counts.

Now! Let me explain to you the reasons I love Evie.

Evie is funny, quirkly, upbeat. I mean, Evie’s got her problems in SUPERNATURALLY. She’s trying to find her place within the “normal” world like she’s always wanted, but she’s discovering that she doesn’t really fit in there. And she doesn’t exactly fit into the paranormal world and with IPCA (International Paranormal Containment Agency) either. Also, there’s the fact that faeries are quite possibly following her and, oh yes, IPCA wants her back. This on top of the fact that she’s pretty sure her teacher at her normal high school hates her and if that keeps up she’s never going to get into her favourite college. Yet, despite all her hardships, Evie keeps up her humor, which is a total breath of fresh air.

I also like how Evie continues to be a strong character in this book. I like Evie because she feels like a genuinely strong character. Evie’s character development is fantastic, and I love how she is such a girly girl who loves pink sparkly things, yet faces down vampires and trolls and what have you. I’m glad the author wrote a character like her because Evie feels unique and real.

Okay, and this is where my Evie-love stops. Because, oh goodness, does Evie also kind of annoy me in SUPERNATURALLY. And I’m thinking this might be where my problems with this book come in. Evie’s got this secret. . .her boyfriend is immortal. . .only she decides to hide this from him, which only hurts her more. She’s also hiding this secret about working with IPCA again from all her friends, which hurts them when they just think she’s ditching them for whatever reason. I hate when characters hide secrets in books. I wanted to scream at Evie to just tell them already! The truth will set you free! However, I can’t say I was too annoyed because I still read this book really fast and, as expected, loose ends and unanswered questions do get wrapped up in a satisfying way. At least, satisfying enough for now. There’s still another book to go.

So, because of Evie’s secrets and such, we don’t get to see a lot of Lend. I loved, loved Lend in the first book, but he’s not in a lot of the second one, which is saddening. And when he does show up, he’s mostly annoyed with Evie. Which is understandable, but not so attractive as the funny boy from the first book.

As well, I’m not sure how I feel about the new character Jack. One on hand, I do like him. He’s like your annoying kid brother who you can’t help but secretly feel bad for because his life is probably miserable and that’s why he’s so annoying. On the other hand, I don’t know if he was entirely needed. Although, it does seem like we will be seeing him again in the last book, and the end of SUPERNATURALLY certainly hints at a good plot line for him.

But don’t get me wrong. . .Evie’s actions, the lack of Lend, and the inclusion of Jack didn’t really disappoint me. None of it took away from my enjoyment of the book. In fact, the only thing I was a little disappointed with was that I think the book ended too quickly. The end wasn’t that intense. Now, this could be just because it’s the second book in a series and it’s mostly just setting up for the third book. I do have high hopes for ENDLESSLY and I can’t wait to read it.

On a final note though, I think out of the entire book, my favourite part was the acknowledgements at the end. They made me laugh so much.

All in all, SUPERNATURALLY was a good book. I flew through it, got sucked back into the world, and wanted to hug the book when I was done. I recommend to paranormal YA lovers who want a quick, fun read. Or even to people who don’t often read paranormal books but still want something quick and fun.

An Enjoyable Read, Well Written, Recommended

 Lucy's Favorite:

As I've mentioned on numerous occasions, my favorite books in the Women of the Otherworld series are those with Elena Michaels as the narrator. In the last four books that we've read for the challenge, my favorite would have to be Stolen by Kelley Armstrong (Book #2 in the Women of the Otherworld Series). I enjoyed this title the most because Kelley introduces her readers to some more of the wonderful characters that we will be seeing within the rest of the series. For those of you reading this series for the first time, most of the characters you see within the first few titles that we've read for the reading challenge, will remain throughout the rest of the series (with more to come of course!)

STOLEN BY KELLEY ARMSTRONG

When a young witch tells Elena that a group of humans are kidnapping supernaturals, Elena ignores the warning.  After all, everyone knows there’s no such thing as witches. As for the thought of other ‘supernaturals’, well, she’d just rather not dwell on the possibility.  Soon, however, she’s confronted with the truth about her world, when she’s kidnapped and thrown into a cell-block with witches, sorcerers, half-demons and other werewolves. As Elena soon discovers, dealing with her fellow captives is the least of her worries. In this prison, the real monsters carry the keys.

What's your favorite title in the WOTO Reading Challenge so far?
