Nikki Logan, has kindly agreed to guest post about her inspiration for becoming a writer in honor of her newest release, Wild Encounter.
About The Author:
lives amongst a string of wetlands in Western Australia with her long-suffering partner and a menagerie of furred, feathered and scaly mates. She studied film and theatre at university, and worked for years in advertising and film distribution before finally settling down in the wildlife industry. Her romance with nature goes way back, and she considers her life charmed, given that she works with wildlife by day and writes fiction by night–the perfect way to combine her two loves.Nikki believes that the passion and risk of falling in love are perfectly mirrored in the danger and beauty of wild places. Every romance she writes contains an element of nature, and if readers catch a waft of rich earth or the spray of wild ocean between the pages she knows her job is done.
Interview:
What was your inspiration for
becoming a writer?
I’ve written for work all my life and come from a creative family as well as always being a big story teller, so it was a natural move for me to start writing them down. But I had six months of paid long-service leave in 2008 and I needed something to do to stop me going insane and so I thought “I’ll write a book. How hard can it be?”. Bwahahaaaa. It was the best four or five months and I wrote every single day, just telling the story I wanted to tell. I took instantly to the writer’s lifestyle (in comfy pants, with my dogs at my feet as winter raged around me) and knew within a week or two of starting that’s what I wanted to do—formally—for the rest of my life.
What do you enjoy most about
writing?
The escapism. When things are going well in a story, I get the same rush from writing as I do from reading. I love the way six hours can pass and I realize I haven’t done the washing or cleaned the kitchen but I just don’t care. I was totally engaged. But I do also like the lifestyle that comes with being a writer (however poor). No rush hour traffic, no ironing, no having to keep a wardrobe stocked with professional wear, no having to lock my dogs out in the cold and wet.
What elements do you believe makes a
good story?
Immersion is key. I want readers to lose hours in the world that I’ve created. So rich, vivid writing and world-building, with relatable and appealing characters, and a cracking storyline that keeps them involved and engaged.
Name the top three things that you
cannot live without?
My fur-kids, my imagination and music.
Which character in your novel do you
believe you relate to most and why?
I surprised myself with the answer to this question because I thought the answer was going to be my heroine, Clare, because of her passion for wildlife which I do share. But, in fact, I think I relate to SIS operative Kaitlin “Mac” McKenzie the most. She’s very career focused and logical and extremely loyal to her partner. She doesn’t suffer fools and she has no time for people who have nothing to contribute.
Is there a message/lesson that you
would like your readers to take away from the novel?
I would love people to come away from Wild Encounter with more awareness of the complexities and risks (and importance) of programs to save wildlife. Wildlife workers risk themselves every day to try and give wild populations a chance to recover. But also that love doesn’t come without risk. On my book trailer I have the tagline ‘In the wild, even love takes its chances’ and I think that’s very true. Everything is harder and more risky out there…
If you are currently working on
another novel, can you give us a hint on what you have in store for your
readers?
