Hi
Moonlight Gleam’s Bookshelf readers! Thanks Lucy for having me on your
blog on Day 11 of my virtual book blog tour – Only four more days to go!
For
those who are just joining the tour, my name is CJ Bolyne, and I am a
first time author. I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. When I was a
young girl, my family moved from the city to the country, about an hour
south of Winnipeg, to a little town called Sarto, Manitoba. This “town”
– and I use that term loosely – was so small that, if you blinked while
driving through it, you missed it. That is where I grew up and, as a
result, a country girl at heart I became.
I
have always had an interest in writing. When I was in school … only
just a few years ago … ahem … I remember that my first writing attempt
was for an English class project where the assignment was to write a
short fiction story. I don’t really remember what the story was about,
but I do remember that I ended the story on a huge cliff-hanger, that I
got an A on the assignment, and that the teacher told me that I had a
“way with words.” And I have always remembered that. I believe that this
was my first inspiration to becoming a writer.
Up
to about 10 years ago, my fantasy story ideas were not really
considered mainstream yet. Thankfully, in the last decade, the fantasy,
SciFi, etc. genres have made a real impact and I was so happy and
relieved that there seemed to be so many out there who thought the way I
did. This served as another inspiration for me to try my hand at it.
I have to admit that, unlike many other authors, I actually did not read a lot as a child! Oh, I read if I had too and that was usually for school purposes. But I usually really hated the boring books in school!
As an adult, however, I have become an avid reader. So many books have influenced me as a writer. Books like Cradle and All by James Patterson, City of Bones, part of Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series, Dracula by Anne Rice, The Twilight Series by Stephanie Meyer, and of course, the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling.
James
Patterson, easily, has to be my all-time favourite author. What an
imagination and good for him for writing the books he wanted to write!
That said, I have to say that I also admire JK Rowling. I really pushed
myself into giving writing a real attempt after I saw a biography on
her.
As
is probably the case with many authors, I would love to make writing my
full time career. Which author hasn’t kept this as their secret dream? I
have. I guess I have always considered myself a writer at heart. I just
needed the courage to do it. Now that I have that, I am excited and
terrified at the same time.
The
hardest part of writing my first book, for me, was doing the research
and the fact that I could not write fast enough. I just wanted to put it
all down at once! Now, when I say “write” I truly mean “write” – pen to
paper. No computer. No keyboard. Just a pen and my notepad. Now, if you
spoke with my publisher, she’d tell you that the hardest part for her was typing what I wrote! Ohhhh, happy she was not … lol. As she said “Who hand writes a book in this day and age???”
