What is your inspiration for becoming a
writer?
Writing is a sensible thing for a storyteller to do. I come from a long line of storytellers—my mum can murder a joke at fifty paces by laughing uncontrollably (or ‘chimping out’, as my brothers say) through the punch line. I believe my dad used to work for the biggest storytelling organisation in the Southern Hemisphere, which at the time was called the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. He was a draftsman but his work was full of characters, not jobs. We traded stories around the dinner table and everything I learned about storytelling was passed on there. I didn’t see my parents reading much as I was growing up. I didn’t make the connection between stories and books until much later in life, but when I did I could see a career in it.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time
besides writing?
Writing is a sedentary job and my body is built for action so lots of my leisure activities attempt to restore the balance. I like power kiting (instead of you flying the kites, the kites fly you), kayaking, mountain biking, hiking and scrounging at the local rubbish dump. I live with my family in the mountains in rural Southern Australia and I love building things: productive gardens, pizza ovens, houses, friendships, musical instruments, bonfires and orchards.
