Joanne Levy has kindly agreed to share a character guest post here, starring Lilah Bloom, in honor of her debut release, Small Medium At Large.
About The Author:
Joanne Levy’s love of books began at a very early age. Being the youngest and the only female among four children, she was often left to her own devices and could frequently be found sitting in a quiet corner with her nose in a book. After much teenage misadventure, Joanne eventually graduated from university and now spends her weekdays as an executive assistant at one of Canada's big banks planning meetings and thwarting coffee emergencies. When Joanne isn’t working, she can usually be found at her computer, channeling her younger self into books. Joanne still lives in Ontario with her husband and kids of the furred and feathered variety. You can follow Joanne on Twitter or find her on Facebook.
Hi. I’m Lilah Bloom and I guess I’m here to answer some questions about SMALL MEDIUM AT LARGE, the book about ME and how I became a medium (that’s a person who can hear ghosts) and found my dad a girlfriend AND helped save the eighth grade fashion show, AND ended up going to the dance with Andy, my super-cute crush. *Whew!* Pretty cool, right? I know! AND I did all this with Alex, who is my best friend and band-mate. Well, she’ll be my band-mate when we get our band together, that is. We’re still learning how to play and don’t even have our own instruments yet, but someday we’re going to ROCK IT! *slammin’ guitar move*
You want to know about the inspiration for this story (did I mention it’s about me?;-))? Okay, so Joanne woke up with the title in her head one morning. She says she has her subconscious to thank—I’m not even sure what a subconscious is—but I’m pretty sure it was actually a ghost who gave her the idea. I mean, that’s what they do sometimes—whisper in people’s ears. That’s how my grandmother, Bubby Dora, got that lady to call my dad out of the blue and ask him out on a date. They think it’s all coincidence, but I know better. Anyway, she thought about the title for a while and then came up with me, a vertically-challenged (calling me short is so un-pc) girl who gets hit by lightning and can then hear ghosts (don’t worry, other than the ghost-hearing thing, I’m okay after being hit by lightning. But in case you were wondering, yes, it was VERY scary!).
And as for Joanne’s inspiration to be a writer? Well, just like my Bubby, she’s always liked to tell stories, especially if they make people smile and laugh. She’s always written stuff down—it’s what she calls her *air quotes* ‘creative outlet’—so she’s always working away at her computer and eventually decided she’d like to share her stories with the world. Nine short years later, here I am! She says that nine short years thing is a joke, but I don’t get it—nine years seems like a long time to me.
Anyway, thanks for having me here! I almost never get to come out. You know, other than in that book she wrote, the one that’s all about me. ;-)
Small Medium At Large:
Title: Small Medium At Large
Publication Date: July 3rd 2012
After she’s hit by lightning at a wedding, twelve-year-old Lilah Bloom develops a new talent: she can hear dead people. Among them, there’s her overopinionated Bubby Dora; a prissy fashion designer; and an approval-seeking clown who livens up a séance. With Bubby Dora leading the way, these and other sweetly imperfect ghosts haunt Lilah through seventh grade, and help her face her one big fear: talking to—and possibly going to the seventh-grade dance with—her crush, Andrew Finkel.
