Thanks for inviting me here, Lucy! This is a terrific opportunity - not only for me to introduce my debut novel, “Under the Same Sky”, but to let your readers know that it is possible for a Canadian to get published in the United States!
A lot of writers say they “always knew” they wanted to be an author. I didn’t.
I did always know I wanted to be a reader. But that got put on hold when I stayed home to raise our two daughters. Then one day, about ten years later, my mom handed me a book, and everything changed. The book was “Outlander”, by Diana Gabaldon. If you know Gabaldon’s work, you’ll know she’s written a huge collection of incredible books; however, it was never enough for me. So one night, bored with television and lonely without Gabaldon’s amazing characters, I told my husband I wanted to write my own book. I disappeared into the computer room and didn’t come out for three hours.
Before that, the most I’d written was basically a “Dear Teacher, Please excuse my daughter from class ...”
“Under the Same Sky” was supposed to be a hard sell, according to the dozens of agents who rejected the work. They said its crossover genre of historical and fantasy wouldn’t be popular among publishers. Fortunately, they were proven wrong. Berkley (Penguin US) was the first desk on which my agent laid the manuscript, and they bought it—plus a companion novel, which I hadn’t yet written—within the first forty-eight hours. (“Sound of the Heart” will be out in May 2012!)
The story revolves around the two main characters, Maggie Johnson, a poor girl living in South Carolina in the 1740’s, and Andrew MacDonnell, a Scottish Highlander. The two have communicated through dreams and thoughts ever since they were children. When she and her sisters are attacked, he shows her how to escape; when he is weary and nearly defeated in battle, her powers roar into his mind, giving him the strength to survive. When both of their worlds fall apart, he crosses the sea to get to her. Their only hope is to find each other. And the only way they can do that is to follow their dreams.
I’m going to hand out a little warning: don’t judge a book by its (albeit beautiful) cover. “Under the Same Sky” is not a Romance, per se. This is a down and dirty Historical Adventure, with a hypnotic love story tying it all together. Life in the 18th century was not a pretty thing, and being a woman in that time meant living in constant danger.
I hope you enjoy “Under the Same Sky”. I’d love to hear what you think!

Under the Same Sky:
Title: Under the Same Sky
Author: Genevieve Graham
Publication Date: January 3rd, 2011
The year is 1746. A young woman from South Carolina and a Scottish Highlander share an intimacy and devotion beyond their understanding. They’ve known each other their entire lives. They live a half-world apart.
And they have never met…
Maggie Johnson has been gifted with “the Sight” ever since she was a child. Her dreams bring her visions of the future and of a presence she knows is not a figment of her imagination. She calls him Wolf, having watched him grow from a careless young boy into a fearsome warrior, and she trusts him with her life and her heart.
Andrew MacDonnell is fascinated by the woman who has visited him in his dreams for as long as he can remember, entranced by her beauty, knowing deep in his soul that she is as real as he. Although he doesn’t know who she is, Andrew believes that destiny will bring them together.
When tragedy and war strike their homelands, both Maggie and Andrew suffer indescribable losses. Separated across an ocean, the bond they share nevertheless grows as they sense each other’s pain, lend each other strength, and embark on a journey of the spirit to find and love one another at long last…
