Follow Friday (20)

Hey everyone!

This is the twentieth Follow Friday posting on by blog.

For those of you who don't know, Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee at ParaJunkee's View where there’s a great opportunity to meet new bloggers!

This week’s question:

Follow Friday:   What book that hasn't been turned into a movie (yet) would you most like to see make it to the big screen, and who would you like cast as your favorite character?

My Answer: I would absolutely love for Maria V. Snyder's Study Series (Poison Study, Magic Study & Fire Study) to become a movie!!! I loved the series so much and I really think that it would be a great movie everyone would enjoy. For those of you who have not yet read the books YOU MUST PICK THEM UP ASAP!  I would select Sophia Bush as the main character :). For those of you who have read this series, who would you choose?

**NOTE**: For those of you who follow me through Follow Friday make sure to leave your link so that I can follow back! :)

Have a lovely weekend all and Happy Reading!

Author Guest Post With Shelley Workinger

Shelley Workinger has kindly agreed to guest post here about her work, and share her inspiration for becoming a writer.

 About The Author:

Shelley Workinger grew up in Maine, graduated from Loyola University New Orleans, currently resides in New Jersey, and considers all of them home. "Solid" is her first YA series and she'd be thrilled to hear your thoughts on the story at http://shelleyworkinger.com.

 Guest Post:

O Solid, Solid wherefore art thou Solid?

Or, more accurately, where were you when I was in the ninth grade?

In all seriousness, the only thing I remember reading in ninth grade was Romeo & Juliet (and getting in trouble for passing a note during the class movie viewing), and I just didn’t get it. I had such a hard time following the Old English that I never even got to see if I could relate to the situation or any of the characters. Then, seeing nothing more accessible coming down the pipeline (Beowulf, anyone?) of my high school years, I basically gave up on reading entirely.

Crazy, right? But sadly not unusual; if someone like me, who read voraciously (and learned from my mother to stash paperbacks in my purse, pockets, wherever) could be frustrated enough to stop reading, then it’s not hard to see how any kid who’s completely overwhelmed by required reading could give up on leisure reading, too.
That’s why I knew when the idea of Solid came to me that I had to flesh it out into a YA novel (and eventually a series, but that came later :). I had to write it for the me of back then that so many girls are now

Clearly, my first goal was to make Solid fun and fast – a complete escape from the school books that had been such work for me to slog through. I also didn’t want to pass on the chance to send a good message to teens and tweens, but didn’t want to undo all my good work by burying readers under heavy life lessons! So I worked in just a couple must-haves: Clio (the teen heroine) had to have real, open communication with her mom, and she also had to eat. Real food. Without obsessing over it.

Beyond making the story easily readable, I also wanted to ensure that every reader would be able to see her/himself in the story, so I created a cast of hugely diverse personalities (and abilities). Still, I made sure the kids had some core commonalities: they’re all open-minded, independent thinkers. In the end, even though the *stars* of Solid are “different,” both from “normal” kids and even each other, each discovers his or her own “super ability” – finds his or her self – and that’s the main message I hope readers walk away with…along with: Reading is fun, of course!

 Solid (Solid, Book 1):

(Guest Review) Called Home: Two Heats Answer by Gloria Schumann

Title: Called Home: Two Hearts Answer
Author: Gloria Schumann
Publisher: Savant Books & Publications LLC
Format: ebook
Publication Date: May 8th, 2011
Overall: 4/5
Source: From author for review.

Emma Benson's view of life was crafted by the death of her brother as a child, abandonment by her father and later, the man she trusted she would marry, until David Schlosser-back in town after years in New York writing best-selling novels-threatens her neatly tended life. Romance blooms. Emma and David eventually persevere in the face of tragedy, refusing to leave their dreams behind.

 Pam's Review:

Emma Benson moved home to a small town to help her mom Nancy on the family farm. She has to worry about how they are going to keep the farm with a foreclosure threat. David Schlosser is a bestselling author returning home to a simpler life style that New York City sure doesn't have. The two come together to fall in love during a mystery.

Emma is a stubborn hardworking woman who wants whets best for her family. She has had a bad past that makes her not to want to trust anyone. I like how strong she is.

David is a smart take charge kind of guy. He is the type to help anyone who needs it. The kind of guy that would give you the shirt right off his back.

I love the way this book starts out. The story begins with a twist as in tornado twister. The action starts right away and doesn’t stop. You have tornados, robberies and a mystery that keeps you guessing till the end. It takes Emma a while to open up to David but the romance is one you can see happening. Unlike a lot of books they are both normal looking and not movie stars and they don't fall right into each others arms. The romantic scenes are very cute and seem very real. It's as though you are watching (reading) a real couple who fall in love. It also has some twists to it that are great.

The author did a fantastic job writing this book. It has lovable characters, very well written, great plot, action and a mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end. Anyone who enjoys a small time mystery and romance should read this wonderful novel.

4/5

 Guest Post:

My love for reading is what started my writing. As an obsessive reader, it only seems natural for the thought to cross my mind about writing. Even now, I  find reading inspirational. If I ever find my writing a little…lackluster, the best solution is to pick of a good book and remember that inspiration. In the back of my head, I’m always thinking that I want people to feel the way about my books like I do about some of my favorites. I suppose that’s how it is with any art form. There’s inspiration and that inspiration leads to creation and that creation leads to expression when you share it with others.

I finished Seven the summer before my junior year of high school.   I honestly don’t remember why exactly I started writing Seven. I can say that for a lot of my books, actually. It’s never anything specific. It was just a little idea here and there that continued to fester until I ended up with a plot. Before I started it, I knew I wanted to try my hand with a different genre, mystery. I wouldn’t say the book is flat out a mystery, but it’s mysterious in nature. I was also aiming for something spiritual, although the spiritually of it appears subtle.

One of my favorite aspects of the books is the romance. I think that for a lot of people, romance is a guilty pleasure. We’re a world driven by love. Why not? In Seven, there are a lot of unexpected romances, I think. There are some things you don’t see coming from the beginning. Right of the bat, there’s the obvious couple, Kale and Hazel who are both teenagers happy to spend the summer falling in love and that love is later put to the test with kidnapping. And…then there are two other couples, one in particular, I’m hesitant to talk about. The hard thing with Seven is that it’s nearly impossible to explain without giving too much away. There’s a lot the reader has to discover for themselves, but I will say that that one particular couple who I will not name, will definitely satisfy that guilty pleasure.

You can find out more about the characters of Seven at my website: www.PaigeAgnew.com

The book is also available at Amazon.com, Kindle and other retailers.

 Seven:

Title: Seven: Seven Strangers One Purpose
Author: Paige Agnew
Publication Date: February 10, 2011

Seven strangers.
Seven stories
One purpose.

One horrible thing in common-kidnapped. When seven people are pulled from their ordinary lives to be pawns in a madman's game of chess, the only way they will make it out alive is to put aside their differences and work together to escape to freedom.

One chance to not only save their lives, but to change them in ways they'd never even imagined possible.

Seven is a fiction, mystery, and suspense-thriller. Seven tells the story of seven people whose lives come together because of a kidnapper. The story of each individual is separate until the time they all come together, by force. Two characters are escaping an abusive childhood home. Another character is an attorney without much direction. Two other characters are teenagers in love. There is also a mom who specializes in taking care of everyone else. And, then there is a dark character who only wants to be left alone. In the book there are clues (or things that appear to be clues) that takes the reader on twists and turns, thus building the suspense. A common thread, as in Starless Sky, is self exploration among both the teens and the adults in the book. Each of the seven characters is forced to look at their own talents and lives in order to escape. Not
all of them are willing. So, will they all be freed from the grips of the kidnapper?

 Book Excerpt:

Hazel jumped when a tall man came up to her window and knocked with the very tip of his knuckle; he had a friendly smile on his face.

Friendly smile.
Such a lie.
Hazel could see that.

He obviously wanted her to roll down her window and she didn't know what to do. Now she wished she would have kept Kale on the phone because she was just so scared now. She felt stupid for feeling this way but she knew deep down in her gut, just knew something terrible was about to happen.

The guy knocked again, a little harder this time and Hazel didn't know what to do. It didn't seem safe to let down her window or open her door. You couldn't just trust everyone because there were some real crazy psychos out there. So she quickly formulated a plan in her head. Leave. It seemed like the safest option to put the car into drive and get away from where she was as soon as possible. No need to worry about being rude to the "friendly" smile.

She took a deep breath and wrapped her fingers around the gear shift but it was too late. She saw now that the guy by her window, the tailgater, it had all been just one big distraction. A trap. On the passenger side of the car someone had already broke in with a not so friendly smile. She was about to scream but the man reached over and grabbed her mouth. She kicked and pushed him off with all her might but it was no use. Clawing and scratching she fought and fought but in the end she wasn't strong enough.

They dragged her out of the car and threw her in the backseat of their own. She gave one last fight and was about to scream her lungs out before they knocked her unconscious. Her head hit against the window and that was the last thing she felt for a very long time.

She had no idea how much time had gone by when she woke up; more than anything else in the world she wanted to wake up screaming and crying over the awful nightmare. Her eyes opened and she hated the reality it all was.

Hazel had no idea where she was or why she was there. The walls were made of cement creating a dusky kind of atmosphere. She sat in the center of the room in a wooden chair; she was surprised to find she wasn't strapped down to it or anything like they did in the movies. However, the door was locked so it wasn't like she could make an escape anyway.

"What's her name?" A male voice outside the steel door asked.
She could hear the sound of someone flipping papers before answering, "Um, Hazel O'Connor."

How did they know that, she wondered, and more importantly, what do they want?

Her heart skipped a beat when the door creaked open slowly and a tall man walked in calmly. For some reason this surprised her...because the man just looked so average with brown hair and brown eyes like any person off the street. He was tall with a muscular body, slight beard growing on his chin. She didn't know what she had expected him to look like but something just seemed so weird about it.

He came until he was about a foot away from her when he kneeled down beside her and rested his hand on top of his knee. "Hazel, it is?"

She was too frozen with fear to even move. But if anything she would have rolled her eyes because she was positive he already knew what her name was.

He ignored her silence. "Well Hazel, I know you're scared, okay? But I promise if you just cooperate with us that you'll be fine. We won't hurt you if you're a good girl. I'm not going to lie, I'll tell you right now that we had to take care of a few other people who would not cooperate."

She swallowed hard and said in a quiet voice, "What do you mean by 'take care of'?"

He tried to smile warmly. "We just sedated them...nothing too harmful. They just couldn't calm down but you seem calm enough so we'll leave you conscious if you like." Then she couldn't hold back anymore. Silent tears fell from her cheeks, one after the other, faster and faster.

"I know you're scared and confused," he said softly. "But as soon as everyone else arrives, everything will be explained- well most of everything will be explained."

She could hardly listen to a word he said after that. She didn't care how nice this guy was trying to be because she didn't feel right about him. To her, he felt as awful as a black hole trying to suck the life out of her. He wasn't a good guy and she didn't have to be a rocket scientist to know that.

Hazel caught bits and pieces of what he was saying as he rambled on about the situation but as each second passed, her heart beat faster and faster. What about her parents? Were they looking for her? What about the cottage and the trip they were going to take? What about Kale? Kale. His name repeated again and again in her head to the point that her poor heart was working too hard. She didn't even realize it at first but she was having a panic attack. She was breathing heavily, gasping for air, sweat was forming on her forehead and now she felt a little dizzy.

The man stopped talking to cuss underneath his breath as if he knew this would happen. Suddenly he stood up and left out of the room and she calmed herself down enough to hear the conversation taking place outside the door.

"Well where am I supposed to put this one?" A female voice asked.

"Hit her with some of the heavier drugs." The man she had just been talking to ordered. "We don't want her waking up until we're organized."

The woman chuckled. "So this one is special, huh?"

"Dangerous is more like it," he mumbled and she heard his footsteps getting closer.

Author Guest Post With Elise Stokes

Elise Stokes has kindly agreed to guest post here about her work, and share her inspiration for becoming a writer.

 About The Author:

Elise Stokes lives in Washington State, with her husband and four children. She was an elementary school teacher before becoming a full-time mom. With a daughter in middle school and two in high school, Elise’s understanding of the challenges facing girls in that age range inspired her to create a series that will motivate girls to value individualism, courage, integrity, and intelligence. The stories in the Cassidy Jones Adventures series are fun and relatable, and a bit edgy without taking the reader uncomfortably out of bounds. Cassidy Jones and the Secret Formula is the first book in the series. Book two, Cassidy Jones and Vulcan's Gift, will be released this fall (Source: Author).

 Guest Post:

  • How long have you been writing? Who or what inspired you to write?

I wrote a few short stories in high school and college, but then got caught up in the busyness of life and put my passion to write on the backburner. For years I tucked away storylines in the back of my mind, planning to have a crack at them when my kids grew up, when things slowed down.  Three years ago, I read an article about Stephenie Meyer and learned that she wrote Twilight with three little boys underfoot. Right there and then, I decided if Stephenie Meyer could find the time so could I. Six months later, I completed Cassidy Jones and the Secret Formula.

  • What inspired Cassidy Jones Adventures?

My husband lit that spark. After determining to write again, I couldn’t come up with any solid storylines, so he suggested we brainstorm. While throwing ideas back and forth, one of his struck me: a boy superhero whose senses, strength, and speed are radically enhanced. Needless to say, I loved the idea, with one stipulation: the superhero had to be a girl. Once the seed was planted, the story quickly unfolded.

  • Have you ever based characters on people you know or based events on things that have happened to you?

Though I didn’t intentionally do this, Cassidy is a lot like me. We share the same humor, love of family, shyness, and can be rather hard on ourselves. We are also fear-overcomers, flaw-overlookers, and loyal to the bone, and we both hate kitchens. Some of Cassidy’s school experiences were mine. There was always some boy I silently pined over, some girl who decided to make my life miserable, and I couldn’t climb the rope in gym class either. Man, I hated that rope!

  • What is your greatest joy in writing?

I love writing dialogue, creating that spark between characters through interaction, which shapes and defines their personalities. When I read, I tend to skim through description to dialogue, so it makes sense this would be my most favorite part of creating a story.

  • What is your biggest struggle with writing?

Writing action scenes. Fighting and martial arts hadn’t held much interest for me in the past, and my first attempt at an action scene reflected this. Basically, I just wanted to get all that messy stuff over with. When my husband read the scene, he pointed out, with some disappointment, “Your superhero fights like a girl” (No offense, girls). So I stepped it up, watched fight matches on YouTube, took notes, and acted out fight sequences with my husband so I could really wrap my mind around moves and describe them properly. The result is something that has received a stamp of approval from action lovers.

  • What piece of advice would you give to a new writer?

The best piece of advice I can give is to just write. My editor, William Greenleaf, once told me, “Writing is like a musical instrument, the more you write the better you become.” So if you have a story tumbling around in your head, grab a pen and paper or flip open your laptop and begin.

(Guest Review) The Crystal Warrior by Mike Cooley

Title: The Crystal Warrior
Author: Mike Cooley
Publisher:
Format: eBook
Publication Date: March 10, 2011
Overall: 3/5
Source: From author for review.
Larissya’s life changes forever when her Grandmother gives her a magic crystal that shows her glimpses of the future. Hunted by mercenaries and an evil group known as the Triad, she is rescued by a large brute of a man named Talos and his band of diminutive followers.

She soon discovers that everyone thinks she is the one referred to in legend as The Crystal Warrior. And that her destiny is to gather the magic crystals and lead an epic battle against the Triad. A battle that will determine the fate of Agorai itself. But she doesn’t yet believe that she is the one.

The Triad has other plans. Plans that involve capturing the crystals and using their powers for themselves. Plans that involve murder, madness and pain. They have been waiting a long, long time for the Warrior to awaken.
From the magic swords Shakari and Antare, to the gigantic reptilian bird known as Taradahn, to the mysterious worm of power called Ishak, to the magnificent tree city of Frizl, Larissya’s story is full of wonder—and darkness.

Will she triumph over the forces of evil? Will she obtain the power of the crystals? Will she be able to save her friends? Or will they die at her side?

 Jenny's Review:

This book is about Larissya and the struggles that she faces when her grandmother gives her a magic crystal. Larissya does not know of the legends that surround the crystals, and struggles to come to terms with the fact that she is no longer the farmer’s daughter she thought she was. Her world is turned upside down when her grandmother gives her the crystal on her death bed. This is the start of Larissyas adventures, finding new friends and allies whilst trying to stay out of the way of the triad. Larissya is rescued by many people along the way who all end up helping her to search for the rest of the crystals, and make all the legends come true. The triad has other ideas and wants to find and use the crystals for themselves, all leading to battles along the way. Will Larissya win in the end, will she loose her friends and allies along the way and will the legends come true.

I must admit at first I found this book very slow, and found it hard to get immersed in Larissyas world. The book itself was well written, and once I got past the first part I found I was immersed in her world and wanted to find out what will happen next.

I particularly enjoyed the interaction between the main characters, as well as the back stories that were given for everyone. I found that the book and the story grow on you and you were interested in the outcomes of all the characters.

Overall I gave this book a 3/5 as I did enjoy the writing and the story in the end, what let it down in my opinion was that it didn’t grab me from the word go. I feel the book is aimed at the YA reader and that they will enjoy reading Larissyas story and the trouble she gets in to. I would definitely look at a sequel to find out what is going to happen next and would look forward to reading it.

Jenny

(Guest Review) Limerick: A Faerie Tale Girl Novel by Kimberly Spencer

Title: Limerick: A Faerie Take Girl Novel
Author: Kimberly Spencer
Format: ebook
Publication Date: June 30, 2011
Overall: 5/5
Source: From author for review.
Jensen hoped she’d never need Shimmerspell again, but now someone is stalking her, someone who claims to be the Lady of the Lake. To make matters worse, witches and dragons have come out to play. And Jensen must figure out how to harness her power and accept her destiny before she ends up losing everyone she loves.

 Jenny's Review:

This short story is a next installment of A Faerie Take Girl, Jenson continues to find her way through the new world she has been thrown into. She is learning more about her world as she goes along, being introduced to new species and creatures all the time, and not always in a good way when they seem to have something they want from her. This story also deals with her growing relationship, and with the forming of a relationship with her father. Jenson always seems to be around when the trouble starts, and this book is no different.

I found this book just as enchanting as the first in the series, always wanting to know how she’s going to get herself out of this one. I was absorbed into Jensons world wanting her to know what was going to happen next, for both her, her friends, her family and her boyfriend. I find that I really do want to read the next in the series to see how everything is going to end.

I enjoyed learning new things about the already well written characters, and the introduction of new species and new problems for Jenson to solve, with or without the help of the people around her. The author did not fail to carry me along in Jensons world.

I loved how the author has continued to keep this series easily read by young adults, and how she has managed to keep Jensons world so enchanting.

Overall I would give this story 5/5 as it didn’t fail to enthrall me. Younger readers will definitely not be disappointed in this continuation of the series.

5/5
