Follow Friday (11)

Hey everyone! This is the eleventh Follow Friday posting on by blog.

For those of you who don't know, Follow Friday is hosted by Parajunkee at ParaJunkee's View where there’s a great opportunity to meet new bloggers!

This week’s question:

Follow Friday: Share your current fav television show! Tell us a bit about it...

My Favorite television show is The Vampire Diaries hands down! The Vampire Diaries is based on L. J. Smith's book series with a little bit of a different story line. It follows the events that occur in a town called Mystic Falls, Virginia, a fictional town that is haunted by supernatural beings. The focus of the series is a love triangle between the female protagonist Elena Gilvert and the Salvatore brothers (vampires).

Here is a great "cosmic love" trailer, enjoy!

**NOTE**: For those of you who follow me through Follow Friday make sure to leave your link so that I can follow back! :)

Taking On The 2011 Outdo Yourself Reading Challenge

Hello everyone!

I know that I have already signed up to quite a few reading challenges for 2011 but, I ran into this challenge the other day and I thought one more couldn't hurt. I decided to participate in the Outdo Yourself Reading Challenge hosted by The Book Vixen.

It is a pretty straightforward challenge that gets readers to attempt to read more books in 2011 than they did in 2010. Last year I did not read many books as I only began reading during the summer. I read only 33 books *bows head in shame* yes I know that is not so many but the good news is that it is only February and I have already read 11 books! By tomorrow it will be 12! Woot :). I am taking on the "I'm on fire!" level as you can see below, which gets readers to attempt to read 16+ books more than last year. That means I will be trying to read at least 49 books this year! No sweat right? :)

My personal goal is to read 100 books once I pass the 49 mark. Wish me Luck!

RULES:
  • Runs January 1, 2011 through December 31, 2011 (books read prior to 1/1/11 do not count towards the challenge). You can join at anytime. You can sign up on The Book Vixen’s blog.
  • The goal is to outdo yourself by reading more books in 2011 than you did in 2010. See the different levels below and pick the one that works best for you. Nothing is set in stone; you can change levels at any time during the challenge.
  • Books can be any format (bound, eBook, audio).
  • Re-reads and crossovers from other reading challenges are fine.
  • You can list your books in advance or list them as you read them. It is not required that you review the books you read for this challenge but feel free to do so.
  • Post this reading challenge on your blog so you can keep a list of the books you’ve read for this challenge. Please include a link back to this post so readers can join the challenge too.
  • You do not have to be a book blogger to participate. You can keep tabs on books you’ve read for this challenge on Goodreads or LibraryThing if you’d like (maybe make a shelf for “Outdo Yourself Reading Challenge”). If you are not on either of those sites then you can list the books you read for this challenge in the comments on my wrap-up post, which will be up at the end of 2011.

LEVELS:
Getting my heart rate up – Read 1–5 more books
Out of breath – Read 6–10 more books
Breaking a sweat – Read 11–15 more books
I’m on fire! – Read 16+ more books

In My Mailbox (8)

Hello again everyone!

Welcome to my eight post of In My Mailbox, hosted by Kristi at The Story Siren inspired by Alea. For those of you who are not familiar with In My Mailbox, it is a showcase of the books you have received for review, have purchased, or have picked up at the library during the week.
Here is what I got during the past two weeks!

 For Review:

- The Deviant by Orren Merton
 Contest(s) Won:

- Double Cross by Carolyn Cane (Signed)
- Sins of The House of Borgia by Sarah Bower (ARC)

 Borrowed For Review:

- Under Wraps by Hannah Jayne (ARC)

Thank you Tynga at Tynga’s Reviews for this amazing opportunity, YOU ARE AWESOME!!!
 Bought:

- The Dead-Tossed Waves by Carrie Ryan

Book Related:

If you all remember a few IMM's ago, I mentioned that I bought a smaller version of my bookshelf. Well... It seems that it was not large enough for my books and I have run out of room. So, I decided to buy another large bookcase that is identical to my original one. I also got the idea to have one as a read shelf and the other as a to be read shelf from Tynga at Tynga's Reviews because it is a great way to organize your books!

Original (Read Shelf)
New (To Be Read Shelf)
What did I do with my smaller bookshelf you ask? Well... My larger bookshelves you see above originally only had five shelves each and I had no more room for the small bookshelf. I went shopping around to buy single shelves but one piece costs more than the price of my whole bookshelf! So I came up with an alternative, I took the small bookshelf apart and used the pieces to add a sixth shelf to each book case as you see above.

What's left of my small bookshelf
I am definitely saving the pieces for later if ever I buy a third bookshelf which matches the others you see in the pictures. Boy will my parents be in for a surprise if I do that LOL! Shh.. no one tell them!

Thank you:
I would like to extend a special thank you to Orren Merton for offering me a review copy of The Deviant and to Tynga at Tynga’s Reviews for being such a great friend and giving me the opportunity to read books I have not received or bought *HUGS!*.

I would also like to thank Larissa at Larissa's Bookish Life and Mary at BookHounds for the great opportunity of winning their giveaway!

Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

Title: Hex Hall
Author:
Rachel Hawkins
Publisher:
Hyperion CH
Format: Paperback
Pages: 336
Publication Date:
March 2, 2010
Overall: 5/5
Source: Borrowed from Tynga at Tynga's Reviews

Three years ago, Sophie Mercer discovered that she was a witch. It's gotten her into a few scrapes. Her non-gifted mother has been as supportive as possible, consulting Sophie's estranged father--an elusive European warlock--only when necessary. But when Sophie attracts too much human attention for a prom-night spell gone horribly wrong, it's her dad who decides her punishment: exile to Hex Hall, an isolated reform school for wayward Prodigium, a.k.a. witches, faeries, and shapeshifters.
By the end of her first day among fellow freak-teens, Sophie has quite a scorecard: three powerful enemies who look like supermodels, a futile crush on a gorgeous warlock, a creepy tagalong ghost, and a new roommate who happens to be the most hated person and only vampire student on campus. Worse, Sophie soon learns that a mysterious predator has been attacking students, and her only friend is the number-one suspect.
As a series of blood-curdling mysteries starts to converge, Sophie prepares for the biggest threat of all: an ancient secret society determined to destroy all Prodigium, especially her.

 My Review:

After a love spell has gone horribly wrong, a teen witch named Sophie Mercer is sent to live at a reform school known as Hecate Hall  by her father as punishment.  There, she and other teen Prodigium, witches, warlocks, shape shifters, faeries, and a vampire, learn how to use and control their powers so that they do not attract the attention of their mortal enemies, ‘The Eye’.

Sophie is immediately befriended by her roommate Jenna, the only vampire at Hecate. Soon after, not only does Sophie discover that someone has been attacking the students at Hecate; she also learns that her roommate and friend Jenna is the prime suspect. Elodie, the most popular girl in school and two other witches try to get Sophie to join their coven for protection, however, she immediately refuses their offer. From there on, Elodie makes Sophie’s stay at Hecate as uncomfortable as she can.

The story would not be complete without the handsome warlock named Archer Cross. Although Archer is Elodie’s boyfriend, he and Sophie show signs of chemistry from the very beginning and their friendship develops throughout the rest of the story with many surprises hidden around each corner.

Hex Hall is an attention grabbing read which will have you tearing through the pages to get to the end. Sophie’s adventure to discovering her roots will keep you on your toes and surprise you after learning the true strength of her powers and the position her father has in the supernatural community. Sophie is a character that shows determination and loyalty to those she cares for. I admire that Sophie is portrayed as a realistic character through her emotions and flaws, although she is powerful, she is vulnerable at the same time. There is a great deal of emotion presented within the novel such as fear, love and hate. By having these emotions presented in the novel, it is easy for the readers to relate to the story and it’s wonderfully portrayed characters.

Rachel Hawkins did a fantastic job in keeping the mystery threat to the students hidden from her readers until the very end. I admire that Rachel kept the characters in the novel true to themselves at all times. From the sarcastic, witty main character Sophie, to the fun, pink loving vampire sidekick Jenna, each character is unique and reveals their hidden depths throughout the novel. Some of my favorite elements were Sophie’s quirky narrative voice, the adventure, the developing romance, and definitely the paranormal elements.

I believe that Rachel Hawkins is a wonderful storyteller that knows exactly which elements to combine in order to please her readers. I recommend Hex Hall to anyone who enjoys Young Adult fiction and the Paranormal with a little hint of romance.

MUST READ!!! LOVED IT!!!

**Please Note: This review is my honest opinion and I received no monetary compensation from it.**

Waiting on Wednesday (5)

Welcome to the fifth Waiting on Wednesday here on my blog! For those of you who don’t know about Waiting on Wednesday, it is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking The Spine, in which we highlight an upcoming book release we're eagerly awaiting.

My selection for this Wednesday is Spell Bound by Kelley Armstrong. As most of you may know, Kelley Armstrong is one of my favorite authors. I have read the entire Women of The Otherworld Series apart "Waking The Witch" at the moment. For those of you who do not know, Women of The Otherworld Series is Kelley Armstrong's Adult series. So all you adult reading lovers, you must read these ASAP! I really cannot wait to read this novel!

For those of you who follow me through Waiting on Wednesday, please add your link in the comments below so that I can kindly return the favor! Feel free to post your Waiting on Wednesday link in your comments as well!!!

Savannah Levine is in terrible danger, and for once she’s powerless to help herself. At the conclusion of Waking the Witch, Savannah swore that she would give up her powers if it would help a young girl. Little did she know that someone would take her up on that promise.

And now, witch hunting assassins, necromancers, half-demons, and rogue witches all seem to be after her. The threat is not just for Savannah; every member of the Otherworld might be at risk. While most her fellow supernaturals are circling the wagons at a gathering of the council in Miami, Savannah is caught on the road, isolated from those who can protect her and unable to use her vast spell casting talent, the thing she counts on most. In a story that will change the shape of the Otherworld forever, Spell Bound gathers Elena, Clay, Paige, Lucas, Jamie, Hope, and others, who soon learn that the greatest threat to supernaturals just may come from within.

Passing It On: The Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award

Hello everyone,

I received “The Irresistibly Sweet Blog Award” a week ago, but I have been so busy with school to pass it along until now.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you to my friends Barb at Sugarbeat’s Books and to aobibliophile at aobibliosphere for giving me this fabulous award, I am truly honored!
For this award we need to list four guilty pleasures and pass the award along to 5 other bloggers.

Here is my list!
  1. Books Okay, I am sure that I am not the only one here who has books has a guilty pleasure J. I can spend an entire day in any bookstore just looking around and enjoying being surrounded by piles of books. It is so hard to choose just one book to leave with, so I use the excuse to take all my time and enjoy the moment while I am at the bookstore :D.
  2. Nutella – Nutella is definitely my favorite type of chocolate. I enjoy dipping fruits in it or just simply spreading some on bread and having a glass of milk to go along with it. Also, my mom makes the most amazing nutella danishes and I have been trying really hard not to eat every single one of them!
  3. Office supplies – I must own every single color that post-its, pens, binders, erasers, highlighters, envelopes, and markers come in. I also own tons of notebooks, diaries, and journals which I still have yet to use. I have currently put myself on a office supply buying ban haha! I hope I can last for a while! Wish me luck!
  4. Makeup – I have recently been experimenting more and more with makeup and ways to create new looks. I am still learning how to use my brush kit for different types of makeup and it has been really fun! I always visit my friend Tynga’s My Makeup Addiction http://tyngasmakeupaddiction.blogspot.com/ blog to get really great new ideas. Thanks to Tynga’s fabulous makeup reviews and blog, I have learned more about mineral makeup and will be making a few purchases really soon!

Here is my list of blogs I am passing the award on to:

Have a lovely Valentine’s Day Everyone!

Until Next time, Happy Reading!

Last but not least, shoot Gini Koch an email at gini@ginikoch.com and let her know you’re worthy of running with the A-C’s (put “Worth My Weight” in the subject line!) by sharing that you’ve been nominated and telling her which other bloggers you nominated, and she’ll enter you into the “Worth Your Weight” Contest. Keep reading to find out more details and what the loot is below.
Of course, you can choose to ignore your awesomeness, but then you’ll never have a chance to nab your own A-C or win the loot. And you know you want both.

Contest runs from Wednesday, February 1, 2011 through Monday, February 28, 2011.

What you win:
Whoever wins the ‘Gator Battle Royale will win a signed and personalized copy of “Touched by an Alien”, “Love and Rockets”, “Boondocks Fantasy”, AND “Alien Tango.” Yes, really, four books.

But wait, there’s more!

The ‘Gator Battle Royale winner will ALSO receive a signed ARC of “Alien in the Family”. That’s right, it’s really FIVE books!
How can you pass this battle up? That’s right -- you can’t! So…get ready to RUMBLE!

But what about those who fight mightily, but don’t win it all?

Glad you asked! There will be four consolation prizes!
  • Consolation Prize 1: Touched by an Alien tote bag and pen
  • Consolation Prize 2: Alien Tango tote bag and pen
  • Consolation Prize 3: Alien in the Family tote bag and pen
  • Consolation Prize 4: Alien Collective tote bag and pen
