Author Guest Post With Dani Harper & Giveaway!

Dani Harper has kindly agreed to guest post here about her in honor of her upcoming release Changeling Dawn.

 About The Author:

Dani Harper is a newspaper editor turned paranormal author.  There isn’t anything she likes better than exploring the supernatural — unless it’s writing romantic suspense.  Of course, all of her stories have at least one foot in the netherworld…

After many years in northern Canada, Dani now lives on an island in Alaska.  She and her husband, Captain Ron, operate a commercial fishing boat and her paranormal stories are written on land or at sea, with the help of her executive secretary, Fiona the Pug.

 Guest Post:

My new paranormal series is about the Macleod family and their friends. Long-lived and able to become wolves at will, they call themselves Changelings. Almost two centuries ago, they were forced to flee the wolf exterminations in Scotland and start a new life in northern Canada. Today, they live as humans – until the moon calls them.

Changeling Moon and Changeling Dream were released earlier this year and the reviews have been wonderful. Changeling Dawn will be out on Dec. 27. I’m very excited about it – I feel that this third installment is the best yet and I can hardly wait to share it with my readers!

“Why do you write about werewolves?” That’s one of the top questions I get asked as an author. As far as I can figure out, I was inspired by actual wolves! One bright sunny morning when I lived on my northern Canadian farm, I was stunned to see a pack of wolves – about 7 or 8 – lope across my yard not far from the house. These big dark creatures were amazingly beautiful, running with ease and grace, seeming to float along rather than touch the ground.

I had an overwhelming impression that the wolves were happy as they ran together, and that feeling has stayed with me over the years. Wolves and wolf-like creatures have popped up in my stories ever since.

“What made you start writing?” That’s another popular question. And I don’t really have the answer to it. Perhaps it’s genetic, a remnant of my family’s Welsh-Irish roots. All I know is that I was fascinated with books before I could read, and once I learned to read, I knew I wanted to be the one who created the story.

I spent most of my adult career in the newspaper business and wrote some fiction on the side just for fun. Then one day I discovered a fascinating new-to-me genre – Paranormal Romance. I read everything I could get my hands on and when reading wasn’t enough, I started writing my own stories.

I still read as much as I possibly can, and I’ve expanded into Urban Fantasy. As long as the story has a supernatural element, I’m fascinated! A few of my favorite authors are Karen Chance, Patricia Briggs, Kevin Hearne, JR Ward and Jeaniene Frost.

Do you have a writing routine? I’m always surprised by how many people wonder about this! Mornings are often the best for me, right around 5:30 or 6. I can write for a long stretch then. I think it’s because my brain is awake (yes, I’m one of those darned annoying “morning people”). The rest of the day, I’ll write in fits and starts.

When I’m not writing, however, I’m always, always, ALWAYS thinking about the story. I used to have to get up in the middle of the night to write down an idea, but my hubby put a hand-held tape recorder in my stocking last Christmas. I love it! I just reach for the recorder on the nightstand and mumble into it, then go back to sleep. It works so well that I had to get a second one for the car – it’s wonderful to be able to quickly record an idea when I’m in traffic.

Blurb and Excerpt from Changeling Dawn (releases Dec. 27)

Kenzie Macleod has spent her whole life hiding what she is, and she’s not about to open up to any man, even one as powerfully attractive as wildlife expert Josh Talarkoteen. But legend says that a Changeling cannot escape the call of her true mate, even in the wilderness of backcountry Alaska.

* * * *

“Wait a minute, you’re Canadian?” she asked.

“It’s a long story. I’ll tell you about it when we go out for dinner. Would you prefer bowling or dancing afterwards?” It was satisfying to see her control wobble as she steered the truck to the shoulder.

“Jeez, do you feel sorry for me or something? I’m not going out with you, no matter what country you’re from.”

“Naw-aw, I made the offer before I heard how concerned your family was, so it’s hardly a pity date. How about giving me your phone number?”

“No,” she said and brought the truck to a jerky stop.

He shrugged, and produced a dog-eared business card with the Fish and Game logo from his shirt pocket. “I’ll give you mine then. If you have any trouble with bears, give me a call. There’s a lot of big griz up there, all gathered to catch salmon at this time of year, and they can be a problem when you’re camping.” He waited a second, then added. “It’s my job.”

He didn’t think she’d take it, but at last she plucked the card from his fingers and stuffed it in her own shirt pocket – which he couldn’t help but notice was tantalizing rounded and the button had to be directly over her…

“Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind,” she said without conviction. Damned if her bottom lip didn’t look just a little bit sulky too. He was torn between wanting to kiss it and wanting to laugh. Since either choice would likely be harmful to his health, however, he opted to get out of the truck. “Wait.” He leaned back in the window. “Be sure to leave the Richardson Highway or you’ll end up in Fairbanks. Take the Tok Cutoff and you’ll come right to Chistochina.”

She saluted him and Josh walked back to get his tire. He thumped on the canopy after he put the tailgate back up and watched the pickup drive away until he couldn’t see it anymore. It was the fourth of July today and he could swear that there were fireworks going off in his bloodstream, thanks to Kenzie Macleod. And her initial outburst had been downright endearing rather than irritating. Why would that be? And why would the woman who just turned him down be miles more attractive to him than that cute redheaded waitress at The Caribou? Could it be those big gray eyes that arrested him? Or maybe it was her long, long legs.

Or maybe it was the bright blue aura that surrounded her. She probably didn’t know she even had it, never mind that he could see it. And Josh would bet money that she had no idea what it had revealed to him.

  16. Is this a trick question,,,because it's one of the best stories i have read...the shifters are the people "next door". she's makes the stories come together.

  17. Dani,

I am salivating to read Changeling Dawn because I loved the first two books. And I love wolves. The trailer gives me goose bumps when I see it, as sense of nobility in wolves as they run freely to the beautiful and charged music. You have a way of making the characters seem so real, like the Changelings could be your next door neighbor, or one could be you. The reader is able to identify with the protags because of their very human elements and yet long for the wildness of the beast within.

    My email is: rebelatheart(at)bellsouth(dot)net

Also, I LOVE that Take the Night bag. Very cool with the wolves. Makes me think of Metallica's song, "Of Wolf and Man." Your books make me think of the song too. In case you don't know it, here's a link with the words:

Listen to the end for the words, even if you don't care for the music.

Here's another link someone put together with great pictures:

Very inspirational for writing those shape shifters.
